December 30 a man goes into a supermarketi did something really weird today. i still don't know why. i wasn't like me at all. it was just after lunch and i decided that our cupboards had been bare too long. so i took the lift to the ground floor, climbed in the car, thought bad thoughts about the guy parked behind me on a horrendous angle, flicked the switch and watched my window wind itself down and turned on the stereo. as i drove to the supermarket i thought of very little other than how good it is to drive at friday lunchtime as most people are at one of the countless mosques in this quiet town.
once i'd parked (straight for once) i locked the car and walked into manar mall and entered the supermarket. i normally feel drawn to look at the dvds they have in the cheap bins as you enter. i could recommend a variety of other bins that would suit their selection better. without thinking, i walked straight into the belly of the shop as if on a mission. i had a list and i wasn't afraid to stick to it. it contained the usual, cliché of; milk, eggs, cheese, orange juice, bread, fruit, blah, more blah. so it was when i was in the produce section that i performed my unusual action. i like to get a bargain as much as anyone so when i noticed the mangoes were a little cheaper than last week i unpeeled a plastic bag from the roll and with remarkable ease opened it. i began to select a mango or two.
now, i should explain that i was looking for mangoes suitable for smoothies. i like supermarkets because we spend ages making tiny decisions that never matter. as an aside, i spent a good five minutes looking at cereals today (and people looking at cereals) and eventually chose nothing reckoning that they either contain too much sugar or taste awful. i might have eggs this week. five minutes is quite a lot of time to waste. maybe it wasn't wasted. back to the mangoes.
i was about to pick up and delicately examine another mango to see if it was up to smoothie standard when, right behind me a man appeared to look at mangoes. he picked up a very green one (as opposed to the squishier yellow ones i'd been fondling) and lifted it to his face. he stuck it right under his nose and gave it a tremendous sniff. the kind of drawing in of breath you'd expect from a man rescued from a collapsed building after 17 days with no water and only the stench of his sweaty tracksuit to keep him alive. he then placed the mango back where it was, screwed up his face, made some hand gesture which sufficiently expressed his disgust and stormed off towards the vegetables, without considering the pineapples or pomegranates between the mangoes and the cabbages. i felt embarrassed.
obviously these mangoes were not up to scratch at that was obvious to everyone else, except me. what was i doing spending so much time with them? i'd clearly missed something. i silently thanked the man and placed the empty plastic bag in my trolley. i then headed straight for the beans and took two handfuls.
oh, and it rained today but i missed it. i was taking photos of ben. December 28 first onei'm
not the kind of person who'll be especially famous or known. not being
a master of any trades or keen to break records, i'll probably leave
this world as famous as when i entered it. however, i should be
celebrated for one thing. i was the first person on earth, out of all
six billion of us, to say the word 'banana', this millenium. i know
this beacuse i was sitting at frank kitts park in wellington, one of
the first places to see the year 2000. as soon as the clock stuck
twelve, i said 'banana'. quite confidently in fact, certain that no one
had pipped me to the post. others were kissing, saying cheers,
yahooing, etcetera. i delivered my one word speech with the happiness i
deserved for the my excellent execution of 'banana'. that is a true story and i remember the events as vividly now as they were nearly five years ago. as i farwelled the kids at school today with, 'see you next year', i thought, 'gosh, it's nearlly next year'. being in rak, i don't really notice small things like time and world events. the weather tells me it could be summer or winter or spring. with christmas a wonderful, though underhyped event, it both comes and passess quickly. we plan to stay another year in rak. i must confess to having itchy feet. what i mean is that i always have half an eye on jobs around the place. not athletes foot. December 22 decked hallseverybody,
thank you. for being a part of our lives this year, we are very
grateful. your contact this year has greatly enriched us. we loved
seeing so many of you in new zealand during the winter. thank you. thank you for your support when ben was born. we're delighted at your happiness that he's here. he's special to us and we love they way he is special to you to. merry christmas. 'behold, the son of god who takes away the sins of the world" - john 1:29 December 19 what are the oddsit snowed in dubai. you see we took the kids down to the new and wonderful (drum roll please) mall of the emirates (what a name). if you have any time or money left having walked around shops selling more stuff than you knew you needed or even wanted, including a 'creamery' selling, i suppose, ice creams, then you will find yourself at ski dubai. it's a big, big indoor snow park with real negative 10 degree temperatures, chair lifts, slides, ice sculptures, ski lessons and snow snow snow. it's amazing. you get togged up in a snug coat and silly looking pants. my boots were too big for me but the soft lining felt very cosy around my ankle and lower leg. once 55 kids and a handful of teachers were kitted out we entered the snow dome. it was freezing, not suprisingly. so much so that i should have worn gloves (what was i thinking? i've have christmases in north yorkshire, london and prague. i knew what to expect, duh). disappointingly for me the light was poor and the bubbling children refused to hold still for a unblurred photo. so i only got a few in focus. still, who could blame the little ankle biters? a snow fight in the middle east! climb inside a real igloo! see a real ice dragon! and toboggan down a near figure 8 slope. then, you could climb up ropes, chuck snow, run around silly, watch skiers, and so on and so forth. it was amazing and despite having a horrendous cold and swearing to spend only quarter of and hour in there i enjoyed the full 60 minutes and even felt a little peeved when we had to go. the funny thing was that it seemed like a very normal thing to do. just another trip. i never grew up with snow. i only saw it snowing for the first time when i was 20ish on a camp at a place called kawhatau in the centre of the north island. but with winter warmth outside at 30 degrees and surrounded by cafes, boutiques and cd shops in the middle of the largest mall in the country, it seemed proper to hiff a bit a of ice around with highly excited (yet well behaved) children. go figure. it was a long day. a 90+ minute drive either way and long waits to get our costumes on. i was texting jenny on the way down and slept on the way back. why not? jenny is currently wrapping pressies for ben. the house is decorated too, thanks again to... jenny! christmas is coming. i'd better get my reports written so i'm not up too late on christmas eve. December 16 maryjenny
dug the christmas tree out today and put the lights on it. it's cool
the way the lights reflect off the floor and in the window of the
balcony doors. each little light is reflected several times. they look
nice. i imagine sometime tomorrow jenny, along with her mother, will
have all the decorations up. i like christmas. i forget about it until a few days before, then it hits me. it hit me today. i was listenting to a carol (wish i could remember which one) while emailing a friend and it started. that sad feeling i get around the end of december when i wonder why i live so far from my family and many of my friends. i wonder if its worth the life we have, to miss the movements in the lives of others we love. i had a web cam chat with my nephew jacob this morning. he's great. he makes me laugh and i always miss new zealand when we finish talking. now that christmas is again nigh my thoughts return to my family and friends. i don't know why i feel sad, but i do. i wish we could just all get together and catch up. chat. drink. talk. laugh. eat. stay late. its not going to happen but i love the thought. this year we have jennys mum here. we'll probably take a picnic to saqr park and enjoy the mild temperatures and a great lunch. with ben there i'll look at him and know that christmas is changing for me from now on. i'm not sure how but they will. December 13 neither venice or praguebut
still it was a nice walk. we drove to the sea and parked in a rocky bit
just off the footpath. the kind of road that if you were a kid you
would go ooooooooooo as you drove over because it would make your voice
all funny. ben was placed carefully in his pram and buckled in.
having fruitlessly reached for his blanket and hat, he was wrapped in a
fleece and a nappy. poor boy. we then went walking.
although
we couldn't resist a look around the al waha centre we could resist
buying modern ready made garments, tailoring cloaks and games of street
fighter ii despite the luring signage. it was time to pray when we were
there so we pretty much wandered around alone.
then we walked back to the car and drove home. i saw a shop selling live chickens and a boy playing with a stick. December 11 you have three dayswhen
i was in the seventh form at wellington college, i had long hair. this
is irrelevant, but i just remembered. i was also in a production of
fiddler on the roof. my job was to pretend to be the russian police
chief and say the kinds of things he would say, in a cross, yet
sympathetic voice. one line i delivered particulalry well (cross and
kind) was "you have three (pause: hold up three fingers) days".
my friends would often repeat this line to me over and over off stage.
you can imagine it became a joke. at the time i was talking to tevye,
the leading man, warning him that i'd bring my heavies with me in three
days to turn over their village if they hadn't left. ironically, and no
offence to my old school friends, but my heavies simply consisted of two friends from my music class, also pretending to be russian police. we drove to ajman again today to get ben's birth certificate sorted. we couldn't do this at the gmc hospital where he was born so we went to the kuwaiti emergency hospital - specifically to the department of preventitive medince. let me know if i'm rambling. the certificate has been typed, paid for and signed. it just needs to be stamped and it will be ready in three days. i'll pop down on thursday morning to pick it up. then to get a kiwi passport. i fear that ben will become an overstayer before he gets his visa and we'll need to drive him to oman to get stamped in and out again. it's a nice drive. we were very lucky to have a handful of friends visit this afternoon. we also received a small parcel from friends whom we visited in melbourne. it's just lovely having a baby in the house. i get the feeling that life is changing in ways unimaginable. once more. December 09 ear to earhe
makes us so happy and not surprisingly dominates much of our
conversation. he is fantastic. so good looking (genetic) and very
responsive. ben is usually comforted with ease (except last night at
3am). he loves to be held and looked at. his eyes are scanning the
place for new things and faces. we are very thankful to all our friends and family who have sent messages using various technologae (plural of technology?). a handful more photos for you if you are like us, unsatiable. December 08 presenting...he's
here. benjamin daniel bucksmith kindly joined us early on wednesday 7
december just after midnight. he is beautiful. he weighed 3150g. jenny
and ben are on their feet and getting accustomed to their respective
roles. i am enjoying every second of our new family cuddling, changing,
wondering... if you have a minute please leave ben a comment on this page, or send him an email or ecard for his baby book. thank you very much to all those who have already texted/phoned or emailed. please understand if we have been slow to reply. no deep thoughts today, just smiles. December 03 weeeeeeeeee! all 49cc of my scooter are humming along once more. i'll tell you the story about it one day. |
