    cabin fever

so kermit jagger goes into the bank of dublin and straight up to the 'home loans' desk. he looks around for someone to assist him. a man approaches with 'mr. whack' on his name badge. 'how can i help?' asked mr. whack. 'i'd like a mortgage', demanded kermit. 'have a seat, sir'. kermit sits down and produces a photo of a stunning condiminium overlooking the mediterranean.

'well, sir...' begins mr. whack. ' it's lovely. how much is it?'

'one million dollars,' announces kermit proudly.

'okay, we should be able to help. i presume you have a desposit?'

    kermit reae
ched into his pocket and pulled out a plastic dinosaur about the size of your thumb. the kind we usd to get in packets of cornflakes. he bangs it on the table. mr. whack, not surprisingly, looks taken aback, but keeps his composure.

    'sir, what is this?'

'it's my deposit,' replied kermit, as if nothing was out of the ordianry.

    'i'm sorry sir, but...'

'is there a problem?' kermit asked demandingly.

'not at all," was the sheepish reply. 'excuse me for one moment, sir, i just need a word with my manager'

and mr. whack popped out and spoke to his manager.

'sir,' he began, 'there's a frog out there trying to get a mortgage for his italian home'

'great!' exclaimed the manager with much gusto. He also swung a bent right arm across the front of his body, along with a loosely clenched fist.

'well, nearly,' was the reply. ' i just have one question'

    'go on.'

mr. whack reached into his pocket and removed the plastic dinosaur that kermit had slammed on his desk. 'what's this?' he asked his manager.

'it's a nick nack, paddy whack, give the frog a loan. his old man's a rolling stone'

    so he did.

    sitting waiting wishing

i'm sitting at our dinner table, listening to the radio and typing. ben and i have just spent a long while listening to jack johnson. i'm sure he enjoys it. now he's lying is his crib just next to me. he might drop off soon. it's a very relaxed morning. jenny is out and will be for and hour or so. yesterday morning i dropped my parents off at dubai airport so they could return to melbourne for a few days and then on to auckland and wellington. it was a very special week with them here. i'm so pleased they could see ben while he is still so small. also seeing our new home through new eyes. we ate out, went to saqr park and dubai. the days out i enjoyed most were visiting oman and a nearby town called al jazira al hamra. it's a deserted town (ghost town some say). the building are in ruin but there is still plenty to see. i've put my photos in an album called 'the doors'. it's been empty since the early seventies when everybody was shipped off to abu dhabi or ras al khaimah. the buildings are up to 250 years old however, making it a fascinating place to rummage.

we're well. the weather is terrific nowadays. toasty warm while the sun's up and cool to stroll in during the evenings. we have friends coming to visit in another month. we're looking forward to many things this year. we hope to return to new zealand in june for another holiday. my brother david will marry his fiancee soon. ben will learn to smile, gurgle, crawl, hold a rattle and eat smushed up pumpkin. life holds many things. who knows what trials will mix themselves into our lives over the coming months?

    happy new year.
